U.S. Department of State updates visa fraud reporting form

The U.S. Department of State has updated its Report Visa Fraud page, providing a dedicated form for the public to submit information regarding potential visa fraud or misuse. The Department encourages individuals to provide as much complete and accurate information as possible to assist with the review and investigation of reported cases.

What information can be reported?

The online form allows individuals to report suspected visa fraud or misuse involving an individual or an organization, including:

• Companies;
• Schools;
• Law firms; and
• Other entities.

For an individual, the form may request identifying information such as:

• Full name;
• A-Number;
• Petition or receipt number;
• Passport and visa numbers;
• Date of birth;
• Address;
• Email address and phone number;
• Social media or profile links; and
• Nationality.

For organizations or other entities, the form may request information including the entity’s name, address, website or social media accounts, contact information, individuals associated with the entity, and the specific location where the suspected fraud is occurring.

What should a report include?

Individuals submitting a report are asked to describe the conduct that may indicate visa fraud or misuse and provide any additional information that could assist with an investigation.

The Department states that the form may be submitted anonymously. However, providing a name and email address may allow the Department to contact the person submitting the report if additional information is needed.

Individuals should provide information that is accurate to the best of their knowledge. The form includes a warning that knowingly providing false information may result in fines, imprisonment, or both under federal law.

How may the information be used?

The Department of State states that information submitted through the form may be used to initiate or support law enforcement investigations and reviews of immigration actions. Information may also be shared with appropriate federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, or foreign law enforcement agencies when necessary for matters within their jurisdiction.

For other criminal or illegal activities unrelated to the U.S. immigration system, or for an imminent national security or public safety threat, the Department directs individuals to contact the appropriate government agency or local law enforcement authority.
