The US immigration petition process usually spans several years and goes through multiple processing stages across different agencies. First Consulting Group (FCG) – Immigration Law Firm provides instructions on how to check the status of your US immigration petition accurately, helping you clearly understand the progress and prepare for each step in your immigration journey.
A US family-based immigration petition is not processed by a single agency but is transferred through 4 different agencies, with each agency handling a specific part of the procedure.
| Processing Agency | Main Adjudication Content | Estimated Waiting Time |
| USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) | Receives the original petition (Form I-130, I-129F…). Evaluates whether the relationship between the petitioner and the beneficiary is valid. | Around a few months to over 2 years |
| NVC (National Visa Center) | Collects visa fees and affidavit of support fees. Collects civil documents and schedules interviews according to the Visa Bulletin. | Around a few months to many years, depending on the visa category |
| U.S. Consulate / Embassy | Conducts medical examinations, criminal background checks, and interviews to make a decision on visa issuance. | Around 1–3 months |
| CBP (U.S. Customs and Border Protection) | Inspects upon entry, activates lawful permanent resident status. | At the airport/port of entry |
Each agency is only responsible for processing a certain stage in the entire US immigration procedure. You need to track your immigration petition status at the correct agency and stage to know exactly what to do next and avoid waiting in uncertainty.
Summary of how to track a US Immigration Petition
Checking the Immigration Petition Status at USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services)
How to Track the Immigration Petition Status at the NVC (National Visa Center)
Checking the status of a US immigration petition is an important step that helps beneficiaries track processing progress and promptly submit additional documents when requested by USCIS.
USCIS reviews the validity of the immigration petition:
How to check the case status at USCIS: After receiving the petition and the filing fee, USCIS sends an I-797C receipt notice (Notice of Action), which contains a Receipt Number (case identification number), usually starting with characters such as IOE, LIN, SRC, WAC, or EAC. This number is used to look up the US immigration petition online on the official USCIS system.
Some notes when checking the case status at USCIS for applicants:

Case Statuses at USCIS
When the status displays Case Was Approved, USCIS will issue an approval notice (Form I-797). This document states the Approval Date — this is the milestone confirming that the case has completed the adjudication stage at USCIS.
The Approval Date is not the filing date (Receipt Date), but the day USCIS officially issues the decision confirming the legal validity of the petition, helping the beneficiary track the next progress, especially for quota-based categories (F1, F2, F3, F4).
Note: USCIS approval only confirms legal validity and is not a visa issuance decision. For quota-based categories (such as F1, F2, F3, F4), the US immigration petition will wait at the NVC until the Priority Date is close to its turn according to the Visa Bulletin. Only when this bulletin is announced as ‘passed’ or ‘matches’ the priority date on the file, will the NVC send a notice requesting you to pay fees and submit financial support documents.
Applicants can find the Approval Date:
The National Visa Center (NVC) is a unit under the U.S. Department of State, responsible for collecting fees, receiving documents, and preparing files before the interview at the U.S. Consulate or Embassy.
After being approved by USCIS, the file is transferred to the NVC. For non-quota categories, the transfer happens almost immediately after approval. For quota-based categories, the NVC will receive and store the case. You will only receive instructions to perform the next steps when the Priority Date is close to its turn according to the Visa Bulletin.
The NVC does not re-evaluate the validity of the sponsorship but focuses on completing the documentation for the interview.
When submitting civil documents, applicants must strictly comply with format requirements. Each type of document must be scanned separately, named, and sized according to regulations.
Applicants can check the status of their US immigration petition at the NVC through the CEAC system using the Case Number.
The Case Number is the file identification number assigned by the NVC after receiving the case from USCIS, usually sent via the NVC’s email notification. For cases interviewed in your home country, the Case Number typically begins with the local embassy code.
How to track a US immigration petition:
If you have not received a Case Number, the file may not have been transferred to the NVC yet or is in the stage where the NVC is creating the case file.

When checking the case status at the NVC, the system will return the following statuses:
US Immigration Lawyers note that Documentarily Qualified (DQ) status does not mean the visa will be issued immediately, but only confirms that the documentation is complete and is in the stage of waiting for an interview schedule.
Before the interview date, applicants need to complete their medical examination and vaccinations at medical facilities designated by the U.S. Consulate or Embassy. Medical exam and vaccination results are usually sent electronically directly to the U.S. Consulate or Embassy; however, applicants should still retain the confirmation slips to bring with them to the interview.
In addition, applicants need to prepare full original documents and copies, neatly arranged in the correct order instructed in the interview appointment letter, to ensure the document verification process runs smoothly.
The FCG immigration legal team advises you to wear polite, simple attire when going to the interview. Arrive early, stay calm, and be confident when answering.
After the interview, you can know the result immediately:
The applicant enters the United States after being issued an immigrant visa. Upon arrival at the port of entry or airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers will check documents, conduct a short interview, and confirm lawful permanent resident status.
In order for USCIS to proceed with producing and mailing the green card, the applicant needs to pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee after the visa is issued. USCIS recommends completing this fee payment before departing for the US.
In case it is not paid in advance, the fee can still be paid after entry according to USCIS guidelines. When making the payment, the applicant needs to provide the Alien Number (A-Number) and Department of State Case ID.
After the fee is fully paid, the green card will be issued and mailed to the address in the United States within 30–90 days.
US immigration procedures require patience and close tracking at every stage. Clearly understanding how to check where your US immigration petition is being processed and the next steps to prepare will help applicants be more proactive, avoid mistakes, and limit unnecessary case delays.
